Deep down, it’s obvious that planning is a way to get control of your business and push it in the direction you want. Think of competition – you wouldn’t expect to win a footy game without a plan, would you? 

The problem is that most strategic plans are never read and never opened after they’ve been presented.

The disconnect between real need and flight-of-fantasy documents comes about because there is a whole academic industry built around strategic planning, that’s reinforced by banks that want numbers that plug into their models.

Maybe it all works for the really big businesses who can afford expensive consultants, but my guess is – if you’re watching this – it won’t add value for you.

What you need is something that starts not with a theory but with an organisation: yours. That responds to your situation, the way you work, the problems you face and the path you want to take.

So that it recommends specific, practical action that you can implement with the resources you have.

It won’t have five years of fanciful figures. It will have specific, short-term steps that will move you forward, along a medium-term pathway.  

It will have steps for building staff buy-in. It will probably have a plan for implementing the plan.

And, where necessary, it will be fearless in saying: this is how things really are.  

If you want a picture you can paint to an investor or a customer, fine: but our strategic plans are about uncovering the core reality and dealing with it.

Quick quiz: what two characteristics do all these statements have in common?

  • I should exercise more
  • I should lose weight
  • I should have a business plan

Of course: almost everyone agrees with them, almost no-one does them.

There's a reason. A proper plan is a big ask for someone who's hands-on managing a business.

And there's a rationalisation. Most plans just gather dust anyway.

More correctly then, we could say, "I should have a practical business plan".

One that helps make decisions clearer. That focuses our efforts where they will achieve the best results.

These plans don't come off a shelf, they are individually crafted to you and your situation. They're practical, hands on – they may even come with a plan for implementing the plan.

We'd like to say, we've spent a lot of years thinking about and doing business, analysing and learning, developing and implementing plans. Business plans, strategic plans, action plans.

We've gotten pretty good at making them work in the field, for smaller and medium sized organisations.
